When you start yoga, you probably are living in your mind and emotions, a never-ending Internet chat room. You read books and articles on what best to eat and how to exercise, reading material that any wild animal would scorn. But you do not know how to live, only what you desire. Instinct is dulled. With asana and pranayama practice, first we move outward from mind and cleanse the body, senses, and organs. Instinct is revitalized. The newly awoken intelligence of the body moves in and tells you automatically what food is good for you, when and how much to eat, when and how to exercise, and when to rest or sleep. People forget that in our quest for the soul, we first reclaim the pristine joys of the animal kingdom, health and instinct, vibrant and alive. At the same time, we are transforming instinct into intuition. Intelligence cuts its teeth on analysis and synthesis, reason and deduction. It becomes muscular. And gradually the higher intelligence of intuition begins to dawn, like light in the sky before sunrise. Instinct is the unconscious intelligence of the cells surfacing. Intuition is supra-conscious
knowing in which you know before you know how you know.
你開始練習瑜伽的時候,你很可能是生活在你的「心」與情感之中,一個永無休止的網上聊天室。你會讀書,讀文章,講求如何吃好,如何鍛鍊;你會閱讀那些任何野生動物都會嗤之以鼻的資訊。但你並不知道如何生活,你只知道自己的慾望。本能變得遲鈍。隨著體位法與呼吸法的修習,我們從「心」向外擴展,清理自己的身體、感官與器官,於是本能重獲新生。醒覺的身體之智會自動告訴我們何種食物適合吃,何時吃,吃多少;告訴我們何時鍛煉,如何鍛煉:告訴我們何時休息或睡眠。人往往會忘記:在我們追求靈性的過程中,我們首先獲得的是動物世界之淳樸原初的快樂,健康而本能,充滿生氣與活力。同時,我們要將本能轉為直覺。智性受益於分析與綜合、理性與演繹,而變得強健。漸漸地,更高的直覺之智開始發端,如同日出前的天光。本能是無意識的細胞智性之顯露。直覺力是超意識認知,在知如何得知之前倏然已知。

If we can see consequences, we are not caught in the trap of apparent pain versus apparent pleasure. Discrimination is about making meaningful comparisons such as, "How does my practice compare with that of yesterday?" or "How does the stretch on my left leg compare with that on my right?" You may well find the right leg is asleep. Initially, this is a process of
trial and error. Later we can learn to avoid error. In headstand pose, for example, something that usually goes wrong is that the upper arm shortens. Memory warns us to be careful before that happens. In this way, we break down bad habits. This is a useful discrimination that awakens awareness.

Memory at the cellular level is at the service of intelligence in the form of intuition. At the conscious level it serves initially as a reference library for intelligence, to be consulted judiciously and with scholarly detachment. When intelligence consults spontaneously with memory at each moment, then conscious intuition arises, and the word we give to conscious intuition is wisdom.
