Yogacharya B.K.S.Iyengar (his student call him "Guruji") is a living yoga master, author of the classic yoga treatise Light on Yoga, his teachings first published in 1966. This book has been translated into 19 languages that you can easily find in any bookstore. Today, he is the author of 14 books.

On 26th January 1973, Guruji laid the foundation of Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, named after his wife Smt. Ramamani Iyengar. Today, at 93, he continues to teach and inspire students all over the world. His daughter, Geeta, and his son, Prashant, are also accomplished teachers and authors of yoga texts.

The Iyengar family's teachings are deeply grounded in the yoga sutras of Patanjali, an ancient summation of the path of yoga considered to be at least 2,500 years old. Guruji's intense practice and almost seventy years of teaching have produced significant innovations in the teaching of the art and science of yoga.

Iyengar Yoga is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment through the development of asanas. It pioneered the use of "props" such as cushions, benches, blocks, straps, chair and even sand bags, which function as aids allowing student to experience asanas more easily and full. Props also allow tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully "supported" methods requiring less muscular effort.
